“I can therefore I am.” – Simone Weil

Hello everyone, today has been a challenging day for many of us. I do not usually speak of the political but I witnessed grief and hostility in many places today. I would like to be a small voice, a proponent of peace and hope. Hope is not the same thing as optimism. Hope walks forward despite the apparent obstacles.

The United States is blessed with a diversity of ethnic groups, cultures, and  beliefs. We inhabit a land with an incredible variety of ecosystems and geology. We need to appreciate those gifts in each other and in the places where we live. All of us have our struggles, but we are now being challenged to go forward together. We need to think to the future that our children and their children will inherit. There are many challenges to be overcome in terms of our health, the environment, education, and care of people who are at risk of being abandoned.

Start where your feet are currently planted, with the people you see and work with every day. Subsidiarity states that matters should be handled by the least centralized competent authority…that would be you. We stand together and face forward. It is our responsibility to create the future. There is no time to despair. Take the energy that you would invest in fear and discouragement, and use it to fuel change. Hazard Zet Forward.

“The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us.”

-Dorothy Day

  1. Thanks for posting this. You said it wonderfully. The best thing we can do now is to help others, lift people up, and move things forward. Things are certainly dark at he moment, but together, we can do it. I’m confused by all of this. Not by how the elections was lost; there are many reasons for that, but by how things have gotten to the point where people chose to move the country in a horrible direction. You’re right. It’s our opportunity to go out, stand up, and fight this by doing good for everyone.

    1. We cannot change the past, but we always have the choice to have a positive effect on the future. I work with many young people and they have been quite discouraged about their future. They are creative, intelligent, and enthusiastic. We need to keep our courage up for them…for all of our children. If you get overwhelmed, look at your hands. You are helping just by what you do every day. Your positive astronomy posts get my students to look up and out at a different future. Do not give up! Do not be discouraged. First and foremost…united we stand, always in friendship first. I am here to cheer you on. : )

  2. I have felt confused, disappointed, and shocked by the ignorant choices people seem to make about how to move forward. The choices seem to be ones that move us backward instead. Perhaps I will be proven wrong.

You advice is good. Make lives better for those most close to you. There is a lot to be done. Feed the hungry. Clothe the naked. You know the story.

    1. Surprising good can come out of any situation. We all have the responsibility to turn things in that direction. Thank you for the reminder of the corporal works of Mercy. Real love survives all things. Thank you Jim.
